Barthélemy Decq was a Flemish painter and manuscript engraver active in the south of France in the mid-15th century.
He created religious paintings and lavish manuscripts at the court of King René of Anjou, and was highly praised for his dramatic depictions of shadows that realistically captured the light of dawn and dusk.
His unique style combined the detailed depictions of Flanders with a French softness, and he was known in later generations as the "master of shadows" because of his mastery of shadows.

King René's Tournament Book
A guide to knightly tournaments produced in France in the 15th century.
Born to King René of Anjou
It is filled with the aesthetics of ritual and decoration.

What is depicted is a symbolic duel.
The Duke of Brittany and the Duke of Bourbon face off on horseback.

On the left, the Duke of Brittany's robes are decorated with ermine fur.
This motif, which is considered a symbol of purity and nobility, speaks of the dignity of the lord.

In contrast, the Duke of Bourbon on the right wears a blue robe with a fleur-de-lis emblem over it.
The pride of being a royal is woven into the garment.

The purpose is not to exchange weapons.
It was a place where one's presence was attested through appearance and posture.
