Engraved Fish Serving Knife – Late 19th Century, France

Period / Date: Late 19th Century
Country: France
Material: Alloy
Dimensions: H 29cm W 6cm D 1.5cm

This is a large, French-made fish serving knife.

As the name suggests, it is a specialized knife designed exclusively for fish dishes. It was primarily used to portion fish and separate the flesh from the bones when serving traditional French seafood dishes, such as soupe de poisson.

During the 19th century, table manners across Europe became increasingly elaborate, leading to the development of a wide variety of highly specialized cutlery. From large carving forks and knives for meat to specific scissors used solely for cutting grape stems, antique collections are rich with utensils that are rarely used today. This piece is a fine example of such specialized dining culture. The blade is engraved with beautiful arabesque motifs and an image of a fish. Its distinctive shape forms a truly elegant and graceful design.

Today, rather than being used strictly as cutlery, it serves wonderfully as a distinctive paper knife for a desk or as an elegant decorative object for your interior.
