Born in Austria in 1862, Gustav Klimt was a master of fin-de-siècle Vienna who captured dazzling golden light, sensuality, and the drama of human life and death through overwhelming decorative beauty.

He continually revealed sensual, somewhat melancholic portraits of women emerging from within magnificent gold leaf mosaics. Discarding traditional painting conventions to express his desires and introspection with absolute candor, his compositions shook the foundations of contemporary Vienna and mesmerized the public.
