ARTIST James McNeill Whistler
TITLE Symphony in White, No. III
YEAR from 1865 until 1867

The Expression of Pure Beauty Where Quiet White Melodies Resonate

Painted by James McNeill Whistler, this work is a monumental masterpiece of Aestheticism that pursued the pure harmony of color and composition rather than the story of the depicted subject.
Lying languidly on the sofa is Joanna Hiffernan, the painter's lover and his most important source of inspiration.
And sitting quietly on the floor is another model, Milly Jones.
At the time, it was common for paintings to be considered tools for conveying lessons or stories.
However, Whistler believed that the beauty inherent in the painting itself was its essence, and pursued his own art.
His deep resonance with the poet Baudelaire's philosophy that "arts resonate with each other," and his use of the musical term "symphony" in the title, also indicate his progressive stance.
The Japanese fan placed on the floor strongly reflects the trend of Japonism (Japanese taste) that was fascinating European artists at the time.
It is said that his intimate interaction with his friend, Albert Joseph Moore, who also pursued the essence of beauty, was the catalyst that brought quiet harmony to this painting.

White Gradations Showing Infinite Expressions and a Calm Atmosphere

What gently fills the screen is a rich gradation of "white" that cannot be expressed in a single word.
Pure white, warm cream, and delicate beige and gray lurking in the shadows.
By overlapping these, it brings a quiet depth and a pleasant breathing-like rhythm to the wall of the room.
Furthermore, the woman's rich reddish hair, the fresh green of the foliage plant, and the faint red of the fan placed on the floor function as beautiful accents to enhance the main character, white.
The calculated horizontal lines of the sofa and the gentle curves of the leaning women are kept in perfect balance.
By decorating this painting in a room, a calm and refined atmosphere is born, just as if a beautiful melody were quietly playing.
By decorating it in a living room filled with bright light or a bedroom where you want to relax, the delicacy of its colors will stand out even more, and it will surely transform your everyday space into an elegant oasis.

James McNeill Whistler

1834 - 1903

Born in America in 1834, James McNeill Whistler was a pioneer of Aestheticism who regarded painting as 'visual music,' relentlessly pursuing the perfect harmony of color and form. He is notably recognized for employing musical terms such as 'Nocturne' and 'Symphony' in the titles of his paintings.

Discarding all narrative and moral lessons, he revealed the fog-shrouded River Thames in London and highly dignified portraits, composed entirely of pale, exquisite tones. His flat, sophisticated compositions, incorporating elements of Japonisme, resonate with our senses like a piece of perfect music itself.

This chic and poetic aesthetic blends a mature, refined melancholy with a stark, quiet sense of beauty, orchestrating a modern daily life filled with comfortable serenity.

  • Reduces UV-induced fading

We use standard acrylic panels, which are ideal for displaying valuable artwork. These panels block approximately 90% of UV rays from indoor lighting and windows, suppressing artwork degradation and preserving the vivid colors when you receive them for a long time.

  • Overwhelming reproducibility that even captures the artist's brushstrokes.

We've adopted a special printing technique that faithfully reproduces even the author's brushstrokes and layers of ink. Rich colors, 16.77 million of them, are laid upon paper with a moist texture that absorbs light. The work can be clearly enjoyed from any angle, without reflections even by a window or under lighting, preserving its original texture.

  • Reliable Delivery and After-Sales Support

To ensure the safe delivery of delicate artworks, we use special shock-absorbing cushioning and reinforced cardboard. In the unlikely event of damage during shipping, please rest assured that we will respond promptly.
