ARTIST Léon Spilliaert
TITLE Self-portrait with a Blue Sketchbook
YEAR 1907

A Sharp Gaze Staring from the Darkness, and Beautifully Burning Blue Trust

A young painter sending a straight gaze from a dimly lit room, as if seeing through the depths of the viewer's heart.
This is one of a series of legendary self-portraits painted when Spilliaert was 26, the period when he was deepening his spiritual contemplation the most.
He tried to re-examine the loneliness and anxiety in his own heart, and the complex emotion of "how he is seen by others," by observing his own face.
In the achromatic colors covering the whole, the "blue sketchbook" he holds in his hand.

That vivid blue almost looks like a symbol of the certain trust that painting is the only thing that saves his heart for him, who lives in a harsh reality.

The Aesthetics like a Movie Scene Created by Mysterious Light

The white light pouring in from above casts deep shadows around his eyes, sharply bringing out the hard line of his jaw.
This somewhat fantastic and mysterious composition brings refined intellect and a pleasant spice to the space.
The whole is a calm tone based on gray, but the "blue" casually arranged on the book and face functions as a beautiful accent.
It is a one-and-only portrait that colors the walls of a warm room with vintage furniture or a modern room with dark tones.

Léon Spilliaert

1881 - 1946

Born in Belgium in 1881, Léon Spilliaert was a solitary Symbolist painter who captured the silence of the night and the introspective psychology of humanity through ink and pastel.

Throughout his life, he continually captured deserted coastlines illuminated by moonlight, geometrically distorted dark interiors, and his own profound isolation.

The realms woven by deeply sinking tones of black and blue brim with an overwhelming stillness and a sweet melancholy that seems to absorb the viewer.

These intellectual aesthetics liberate the mind from the clamor of modern life, bringing exquisite serenity and mysterious depth to private spaces.

  • Reduces UV-induced fading

We use standard acrylic panels, which are ideal for displaying valuable artwork. These panels block approximately 90% of UV rays from indoor lighting and windows, suppressing artwork degradation and preserving the vivid colors when you receive them for a long time.

  • Overwhelming reproducibility that even captures the artist's brushstrokes.

We've adopted a special printing technique that faithfully reproduces even the author's brushstrokes and layers of ink. Rich colors, 16.77 million of them, are laid upon paper with a moist texture that absorbs light. The work can be clearly enjoyed from any angle, without reflections even by a window or under lighting, preserving its original texture.

  • Reliable Delivery and After-Sales Support

To ensure the safe delivery of delicate artworks, we use special shock-absorbing cushioning and reinforced cardboard. In the unlikely event of damage during shipping, please rest assured that we will respond promptly.
