Masonic Orb Pendant – 1920s, England
Period / Date: 1920s
Country: England
Material: Alloy (surface likely 9ct gold)
Dimensions: H 17mm W 17mm D 17mm
This Masonic orb from the early 20th century served as a token of membership for Freemasons in England.
A remarkable feat of period metalwork, this small, marble-sized orb representing the globe is ingeniously constructed with miniature hinges and clasps. When unfolded, it transforms into a cross composed of six small pyramids. Each pyramid has four faces, all intricately hand-engraved by a skilled artisan with Masonic symbols, resulting in a deeply esoteric artifact. Upon opening the uppermost pyramid, the first symbol revealed is the Eye of Providence (the all-seeing eye), an iconic emblem of Freemasonry, demonstrating the meticulous adherence to Masonic doctrine in its design. Across its 24 faces, a rich array of other symbols are engraved, including stonemason's tools, a pentagram, a compass and square, the sun and moon, as well as a skull, coffin, and cross, which represent resurrection and eternity.
Despite its diminutive size, it encapsulates an entire cosmological and philosophical world. It can be elegantly worn on a chain as a pendant or utilized as a distinctive charm.
