The History of Amsterdam and the Bonds of Girls Engraved in Red and Black Uniforms

Nicolaas van der Waay, who led the Dutch art world from the 19th to the 20th century, deeply loved and repeatedly painted the girls living in the Civic Orphanage (Burgerweeshuis) in Amsterdam.
The distinctive uniforms they wear are historic ones derived from the coat of arms of Amsterdam, bearing the history of the city.
This orphanage was so famous at the time that it was introduced in travel guides as a must-visit attraction as the pride of the city.

Born in the Netherlands in 1855, Thérèse Schwartze was a master of academic painting who timelessly captured the radiant light of Amsterdam and the beauty of its inhabitants.

What immortalized her name was a series of works depicting the girls of the Amsterdam Orphanage, adorned in their distinctive red and black uniforms.
