A Soul-Stirring Spiral of Loneliness Found by a Sleepless Painter on a Night Walk

Léon Spilliaert, a symbolist painter representing Belgium, suffered from severe insomnia throughout his life and wandered alone through the silent streets and coasts of Ostend at night.
From those harsh, lonely night walks, his one-and-only mysterious art was born.
This work, "Vertigo," depicts a single woman descending an endlessly continuing giant spiral staircase, her hair and dress swaying in the night wind.
The absorbing depth of the spiral and the lonely figure evoke the "fluctuations" lurking in the depths of our hearts and the profound loneliness we feel as we live.

Dynamic Black Gradations Giving Depth to Industrial Spaces

By repeatedly layering India ink, watercolor, and colored pencils, Spilliaert expressed a gradation from an absorbing jet black to a soft gray.
