This is a rare wooden hand mirror featuring exquisite rocaille ornamentation.
Rocaille, a French term originally meaning rock or stone, originated in the 16th and 17th centuries from the practice of decorating aristocratic rooms with artificial rocks and shells to evoke grottos and the deep sea. It later evolved into a highly decorative art form, culminating in the 18th-century Rococo style, where "rocaille" became the definitive term for ornamentation characterized by intertwining shells and sinuous, botanical curves. The Palace of Versailles in Paris and Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna are renowned for their magnificent rocaille interiors.
This 19th-century piece is a superb expression of this rocaille style, masterfully rendered in wood. The handle is exceptionally well-crafted, designed to fit perfectly in the hand. Every detail has been meticulously hand-carved by a skilled artisan. Over the course of more than 150 years, the mirror glass has developed a beautiful silvered patina, which only enhances its evocative, antique atmosphere.
A refined addition to any sophisticated interior setting or curated collection.
